California Contractors State License Board

The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) is a consumer protection board in charge of licensing / regulating construction contractors who work in California.  The responsibilities of the CSLB is to resolve consumer complaints, educate consumers, and enforce state laws that pertain to contractors.

The California Contractors State License Board licenses or certifies contractors in 45 classifications and registers home improvement salespeople. The CSLB is governed by a 15 member board made up of licensed contractors, building officials, members of the public, and labor representatives.

The CLSB responsibilities include: reviewing applicant qualifications; testing prospective licensees; issuing licenses to contractors; providing info related to new and changing laws; investigating complaints against contractors; issuing citations and suspending or revoking licenses; seeking administrative, criminal, and civil sanctions against violators; and informing consumers, contractors, and the industry about CSLB actions.
