Hawaii State Fish: Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa

Scientific Name: Rhinecanthus rectangulus

State Fish Description: The Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa is the state fish of Hawaii and was dedicated the state fish in 2006. The Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa also known as the Humuhumu for short or elsewhere known as a Lagoon Triggerfish is a very brightly colored trigger fish with bright yellow and black colors with lines of blue. The name Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa is often referred to as one of the longest words in the Hawaiian language and that the word is longer than the fish.

Where It's Found: The Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region and is found most often in the coral reefs of the Hawaiian Islands.
