Illinois State Fish: Bluegill

Scientific Name: Lepomis macrochirus

State Fish Description: The Bluegill is a member of the panfish family of fish and is often called a brim, bream, or sometimes a copper nose. The Blue is mostly green with a brighter orange underbelly and easily identified by a dark spot on backside of it's gill plate. Bluegill range in size from 4 inches up to 12 inches, with the largest Bluegill ever caught being 12 ounces.

Where It's Found: The Bluegill is found everywhere in North America and generally is found in shallow water in lakes, ponds, and rivers. The Bluegill is a freshwater fish that often can be found in weedy areas of lakes & ponds.

Illinois State Bird: Northern cardinal

Scientific Name: Cardinalis cardinalis

State Bird Description: The Northern Cardinal is one of the most recognizable birds in the United States, often called a redbird or or common cardinal they are recognized by their bright red color in males and the crest atop their heads. The male cardinal boasts a bright crimson red color with a black mask on it's face, and the females is a lighter orange to brown-orange color with a bright orange beak with a orange crest atop it's head. Many backyard birders attract cardinals to their yards using bird seed with sunflowers seeming to be their favorites.

Where It's Found: The Northern Cardinal can be found in southern parts ofCanada, the eastern US from Maine to Texas and onward south through Mexico. It often is found in woodlands, backyards, shrublands, and swamplands.

Scientific Name: Viola

State Flower Description: Violets are one of the most common flowers with over 20 genera in the family of the Viola. The most common is the purple violet and is a brilliant purple with 5 petals and generally bloom around mid to late spring.

Where It's Found: Violets are found everywhere but most commonly found in eastern North America.
