Iowa State Fish: Channel catfish

Scientific Name: Ictalurus punctatus

State Fish Description: The Channel Catfish is one of the most numerous catfish species in the United States, and is the most popular catfish for anglers to fish for. Channel Catfish are a silver sided catfish with a darker back and whom have a very keen sense of smell. Channel Catfish are fished for in rivers, lakes, and ponds in the US and can be caught on a wide variety of bait such as worms, livers, cut bait, shad, shiners and minnows.

Where It's Found: Channel Catfish are found in rivers, lakes, and ponds in most states in the United States and the lower sections of Canada mostly around the Great Lakes. In Iowa Channel Catfish are found in locations such as Lake Pahoja, Lake Okoboji, English River, The Des Moines River, Cedar River, Iowa River, Raccoon River, and lower Skunk River.

Iowa State Bird: Eastern goldfinch

Scientific Name: Carduelis tristis

State Bird Description: The American Goldfinch is a small member fo the finch family which is popular for bird feeders to attract to their yards. The American Goldfinch is sometimes referred to as the Eastern Goldfinch due to the large numbers often seen on the East Coast of the US. The American Goldfinch is approximately 7 to 8 inches long and weighs less than 1 oz. The male American Goldfinch is a brilliant yellow during mating season and the females are a lighter yellow somewhat brown. The American Goldfinch is the only finch to molt all it's feathers two times a year.

Where It's Found: The American goldfinch can be found in the majority of the US and prefers open country such as fields, meadows, flood plains. It often can be found in gardens and backyards especially if there is a feeder of thistle close by.

Iowa State Flower: Wild prairie rose

Scientific Name: Rosa arkansana

State Flower Description: The Wild Prairie Rose flower is about 2 inches wide and very fragrant. The wild prairie rose has five petals and vary from pink to white. The petals of the Wild Prairie Rose are edible and can be used in salads, to make tea, or can be candied.

Where It's Found: Wild Prairie Roses are found across Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, north to Colorado, as well as Kansas and Minnesota. The Wild Prairie Roses are grown in prairies, woodland margin and disturbed areas in these states.
