Alabama is located in the eastern south-central United States and is bordered on the north by Tennessee; on the east by Georgia, the southern border by Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico; and on the west by Mississippi. Alabama is divided into four major physiographic regions: the Gulf Coastal Plain, Piedmont Plateau, Ridge and Valley section, and Appalachian Plateau. Alabama is 51,705 square miles, of which land makes up 50,767 square miles and water makes up 938 square miles. Alabama ranks 29th in size among the 50 states.
