Colorado State Fish: Greenback Cutthroat Trout

Scientific Name: Oncorhynchus clarki stomias

State Fish Description: The Greenback Cutthroat Trout is a greenish color and like all cutthroats it has a red color under it's jawbone. The Greenback Cutthroat doesn't grow to be very large with 18 inches being about the largest size. The Greenback Cutthroat is currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Where It's Found: The Greenback Cutthroat once was found in Arkansas and stretching into Eastern Colorado and Southeast Wyoming, today they are only found in less than 1% of the waters it once was found.

Colorado State Bird: Lark bunting

Scientific Name: Calamospiza melanocorys

State Bird Description: Lark Bunting are smaller sized song birds that reside in central and western North America. The male adult breeding Lark Bunting looks different than the immature non-breeding males and females. The breeding males are all black body with a large white patch on the upper part of the wing. The immature males and females look similar and are grayish brown with white stripes.

Where It's Found: The lark bunting is found in the grasslands of North America and breed in the prairie regions in central Canada and the mid-western United States.

Colorado State Flower: Rocky Mountain Columbine

Scientific Name: Aquilegia caerulea

State Flower Description: The Rocky Mountain Columbine blooms in July and August and is endemic (native) to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The blooms are lavender and white, and the entire plant reaches 2 to 10 inches in height.

Where It's Found: The Rocky Mountain Columbine can be found in sub-alpine and alpine areas at elevations of 10,800 to 13,000 ft in the Rocky Mountains and is only found in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
