Louisiana State Bird: Brown pelican

Scientific Name: Pelecanus occidentalis

State Bird Description: The Brown Pelican is a coastal bird that is found around the southern and western coastal areas of the United States. The Brown Pelican is a smaller sized pelican as far as pelican go and is one of only two that will dive to feed. The brown pelican can be distinguished from other pelicans by it's size an brown color, the more common white pelican is much larger and mostly white and does not dive into the water to feed.

Where It's Found: The Brown Pelican is found on both coasts of the United States and primarily around the Gulf of Mexico where a great population lives. They're very rarely seen above the Carolinas on the east coast.
