Maine State Bird: Black-capped chickadee

Scientific Name: Poecile atricapilla

State Bird Description: The Black-capped Chickadee is a small nonmigratory bird that is often referred to as a snow bird. The Black-capped Chickadee is able to withstand extreme cold temperatures and doesn't migrate like other birds. During the winter months in the northeast this is one of the few birds that you still see around. The Black-capped Chickadee is a black and white bird that has a black cap and white checks with light brown sides and black and white pin striped wings.

Where It's Found: The black-capped chickadee is found on both coasts of the United States in the northern half of the country. The Black-capped Chickadee prefers to live in the deciduous woods but also can be found open woods, parks, and suburban areas.
