In the United States most but not all US States have declared state fish that represent their state. These fish generally are a sporting fish that is sought after by fisherman or may be in large numbers in the state. In some instances such as Hawaii, the Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa also known as a reef triggerfish is such a beautiful fish it represents the beauty of the islands of Hawaii. The only states without state fish currently are Ohio, Kansas, and Arkansas.

Currently only three US states have nominated crustaceans as state symbols in the United States. Louisiana has declared the Crayfish it's state crustacean, Maryland the Blue Crab, and Oregon's is the Dungeness Crab. These crustaceans are a major part of the economy and culture in these three states which leads to them becoming state symbols.

In the United States some US States have designated Amphibians as state symbols. Not all 50 states have State Amphibians. Generally states that designate Amphibians as a state symbol do so out of tradition or the state legislature has done so due to the amphibian being special to their state.

In the United States all 50 states have a state motto, some of the states motto's have been officially declared into state legislature approved by the states congress. States have motto's which describe the states motivation or general intent of the particular state.
