State Flower of Alabama

The official flower of Alabama is the Camellia which was approved as the state flower on August 26th, 1959 via House Bill 24.  The wording of Bill 24 was as follows: "The camellia is hereby designated and named as the state flower of Alabama."  Prior to the camellia being the state flower of Alabama the Goldenrod was the state flower which became law on September 6th, 1927.

In June of 1999, the Alabama Legislature designated the camellia, (Camellia joponica L.) the Official State Flower.

Alabama State Fish



Alabama Freshwater State FishAlabama Freshwater State Fish Alabama Saltwater State FishAlabama Saltwater State Fish Alabama currently has two state fish, one being the Freshwater State Fish being the Largemouth Bass which was approved the Alabama freshwater state fish in 1975, prior to that the fighting tarpon was the only state fish and is currently the Saltwater State Fish in Alabama which was nominated and approved as the state fish in 1955 .

Largemouth Bass reside in freshwater lakes, ponds & rivers in Alabama and reach weights up to 10lbs with the average being much smaller than that.  The Tarpon on the other hand is a saltwater species that resides in the waters of Gulf of Mexico and reaches upwards to 100lbs.

Alabama Coat of Arms

Alabama's State Coat of Arms features two eagles which symbolizes courage, the eagles support a shield bearing the emblems of the five governments that have held sovereignty over Alabama. Above the shield is a sailing vessel modeled upon the ships of the first French settlers of Alabama; beneath the shield is the state motto.

State Seal of Alabama

Albama's state seal was originally designed in 1817 by the first governor of the Alabama Territory which was William Wyatt Bibb. The great seal of Alabama displays all the surrounding states once territories and all the major rivers of the state. For over 50 years the Great Seal of Alabama remained unchanged until the civil war which then it was recreated as a new seal with an eagle standing on an American Shield holding a banner which read "Here We Rest"  In 1939 a bill was approved by the Alabama Legislature and Governor Frank M. Dixon to restore the original seal which replaced the Seal of 1868–1939.

State Flag of Alabama

The Alabama State Flag consists of the Crimson St. Andrew's cross on a white background, patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag, and was adopted in 1895 as the state flag.  The Red Bars and White background is also the state of Alabama's state colors.

Alabama State Bird

The northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a member of the woodpecker family and the Northern Flicker is native to most of North America and is one of the few in the woodpecker family that migrate. The Northern Flicker can be found in open habitats near trees, such as woodlands, edges, yards, and parks. In the west they're mostly located in mountain forests. US States Bats

Currently only three states have state bats, Virginia, Texas, and Oklahoma with Texas's and Oklahoma's bat being the same species the Mexican Free Tailed Bat.  In 2007 North Carolina was close to recognizing the Rafinesque's Big-eared Bat as their state bat but the North Carolina State Senate failed to act on the bill that passed the House in NC.
