Delaware State Fish

 

Delaware State Fish: Weakfish

Scientific Name: Cynoscion regalis

State Fish Description: The Weakfish also known as a sea trout, is a popular game fish along the coasts of the Eastern seaboard and is recreationally fished for from the surf and boats. The name weakfish comes from the fishes mouth tenderness which is generally soft and fishermen loose many weakfish due to the hooks pulling from their mouth during a fight. The Weakfish grow up to 3 feet in length and up to 20 lbs, the fish has a silvery look with a white belly and specks across it's flanks.

Where It's Found: The Weakfish is found all along the east coast of North America. It is fished for a lot on the beaches of Delaware and Maryland and considered a prize catch.

Connecticut State Fish

 

Connecticut State Fish: American shad

Scientific Name: Alosa sapidissima

State Fish Description: The American Shad is primarily a saltwater fish that spends much of it's time at sea, however when spawning they run up freshwater rivers for very long distances. Adult American Shad grow quite large for shad, and get up to 8 lbs. American Shad are sought after by fisherman in rivers where they run, they can be caught with shad darts or flutter spoons and are quite tasty.

Where It's Found: American Shad can be found all along the eastern coast of the United States where any major river empties into the Atlantic Ocean, huge populations of shad run up the Connecticut river.

Colorado State Fish

 

Colorado State Fish: Greenback Cutthroat Trout

Scientific Name: Oncorhynchus clarki stomias

State Fish Description: The Greenback Cutthroat Trout is a greenish color and like all cutthroats it has a red color under it's jawbone. The Greenback Cutthroat doesn't grow to be very large with 18 inches being about the largest size. The Greenback Cutthroat is currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Where It's Found: The Greenback Cutthroat once was found in Arkansas and stretching into Eastern Colorado and Southeast Wyoming, today they are only found in less than 1% of the waters it once was found.

California Saltwater State Fish

 

California State Fish: Garibaldi (Saltwater)

Scientific Name: Hypsypops rubicundus

State Fish Description: The Garibaldi is a bright orange fish in the damselfish family that is commonly found around Santa Catalina Island, California and in La Jolla Cove which is by San Diego. Adult Garibaldi is a bright orange while the juvenile fish are a more reddish color.

Where It's Found: The Garibaldi is often found in waters around 95+ feet around rocky reefs or rocky sea bottoms. The Garibaldi is native to the north-eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean, which range from Monterey Bay, California, to Guadalupe Island, Baja California.

California Freshwater State Fish

 

California State Fish: Golden trout

Scientific Name: Oncorhynchus mykiss aguabonita

State Fish Description: The Golden Trout is a native trout to California and is closely related to the rainbow trout. The Golden Trout has a very golden side with around 10 large darker spots and a green back. Golden Trout average around 6 to 12 inches in size and one being over 11 inches would be considered a large Golden Trout.

Where It's Found: The Golden trout is found at higher elevations from 7000 feet to 10,000 feet above sea level, and is native only to California's southern Sierra Nevada mountains.

Arizona State Fish

 

Arizona State Fish: Apache trout

Scientific Name: Oncorhynchus gilae

State Fish Description: The Apache Trout is a golden color trout which has medium sized dark spots. It's a closely related to the cutthroat trout. The Apache Trout ranges in size from 6 to 24 inches and from around 6 ounces to 6 pounds. The Apache Trout is considered by IUCN to be critically endangered, and it is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. At one time the Apache Trout could be found in large numbers in all 600 miles of the streams of the White Mountains but know only 30 miles holds these fish.

Where It's Found: The Apache Trout can be found natively in clear, cool streams in the White Mountains also it is native to the upper Salt River watershed (Black and White rivers) and the upper Little Colorado River watershed.
